Beyond the Play: Winning the Bigger Game

To all my athletes, big or small, I hope you understand the real end goal: to make the big play. And here’s what I mean.

The ones who started in youth sports, turned heads in high school, and earned that college scholarship—listen up. I know the dream is to go pro, to make a living doing what you love. But sometimes the path isn’t about the league, it’s about leading you to your rightful purpose. And let’s be real: I’ve never seen a straight path lead to something great. There will be bumps, sharp curves, and even dead ends. But if you stay ready, you never have to get ready, because you’re conditioned to go!

Pay attention to your surroundings. The rooms you’re blessed to be in. The people you cross paths with. Don’t get tunnel vision, that’s one of the biggest mistakes people make, athletes or not. Make use of every opportunity that comes your way. Keep sharpening your skills, on and off the field.

And remember this: not being picked in the first, second, or third draft round doesn’t mean you failed. It means you’ve advanced to the next stage of the game if you’re willing to take on the challenge. The real question is, are you hungry enough to keep going?

Because greatness doesn’t belong to the chosen few. It belongs to the ones who choose to keep playing.
